Monitoring pH and TDS Levels
Successful indoor gardening does require a little maintenance of the nutrient solution.
Most plants prefer a pH of 5.5-6.5. Untreated water from the tap is typically too
alkaline (7 or higher) or too acid (7 or lower). When the pH level of your nutrient
solution is too high or too low, plants are unable to maximize their nutrient uptake.
When neutral pH levels are maintained, plants will produce higher yields and grow
faster. The same holds true for the TDS (total dissolved solids). This is most
important when mature plants are using more water than nutrients. If you add the
recommended portion of nutrients to the water, even after one week, a potentially
harmful nutrient level can accumulate in your reservoir. This can be regulated by
simply adding water. Either way you will have no idea if you are not testing the TDS
levels in the nutrient solution. It will also help you to maximize the potential
output of most plants.
